Detection of Borax in Meatbal with Toothpick and Turmeric

Abstract

Borax is a chemical used as a food additive by several seller. Borax is basically prohibited by the government because it can cause food poisoning and cause symptoms of dizziness, vomiting and organ damage. A popular snack among school children is meatball. Almost everyone likes meatball so the aim of this activity is to socialize how to test meatball.  containing borax using a toothpick that has been soaked in turmeric water. Socialization of this test method was carried out among first semester students of the Hasyim Asy'ari University Faculty of Engineering Jombang Regency East jawa Indonesia. The meatball tested were purchased randomly from 15 seller around the school. The result of test are 33% positive borax and 67% negative
